Student Activities

All student activities are open to students in grade 7 – 12 and in the Academy Plus Program.

Choir (Co-Educational)
All Year

Students in grades 7-12 and the Academy Plus Program interested in singing in an ensemble will be welcomed without an audition.  The entire group performs at winter and spring programs and other school events as requested. 

Drama (Co-Educational) 
Variable

Students participate in rehearsals, set production, sound and light staging, and performance of selected plays and skits.  Performances may be scheduled during the school day, in the evening, or on weekends for students, parents, community groups, the general public, or other schools for the blind in conjunction with extracurricular trips. 

Forensics / Speech
February to April              

Students compete in speech and forensics contests against local public schools and other schools for the visually impaired in conjunction with swim meets.  The season culminates with the North Central Association of Schools for the Blind (NCASB) Conference Forensics Meet in April.

Goal Ball (Boys and Girls)
February to April

Students compete on three-person teams using a ball with bells.  All members of both teams are blindfolded and must rely on hearing alone to locate and block the ball before it crosses their goal line.  Competition is scheduled with local community youth, and with other schools for the visually impaired in conjunction with other extracurricular activities.

Athletes need to provide athletic supporter (boys), support bra (girls), practice clothes.

Swimming (Boys and Girls)
February to April

Students compete against athletes form other schools for the visually impaired in individual and relay events.  Swim meets are held on weekends and often involve out-of-state travel and overnight stays at host schools.  The season culminates with the North Central Association of Schools for the Blind (NCASB) conference swimming/forensics meet in April.  
Athletes must provide practice swimsuit, swim cap, and 
swim goggles (optional).

Track and Field (Boys and Girls)
September – October

Students compete against other visually impaired athletes in standard and adapted track and field events in three classes based on visual acuity.  Meets are held on weekends, and often involve out-of-state travel and staying overnight at host schools.  The culmination of the season is the North Central Association of Schools for the Blind (NCASB) Conference Track and Field Championships held in mid-October.

Wrestling (Co-Educational)
November to January

Students wrestle other athletes in thirteen classes based on the student's weight.  Scrimmages may be held with neighboring public and parochial schools.  Meets against other NCASB Conference schools are held on weekends and often involve out-of-state travel and overnight stays.  The NCASB Conference Championship is held in mid-January.
