High School Program

MSAB’s High School Program is designed for students in grades 9 - 12, who are visually impaired or blind and may have additional disabilities.  Programming involves students in developmentally appropriate learning activities and concepts at an individualized level.  Our classroom content follows the Minnesota State Standards and we have adopted textbooks that follow these standards as well as meet the unique learning styles of students who are blind or visually impaired.

Our students' academic day focuses on reading, writing, math, science, social studies, assistive technology and physical education.  Students also have exposure to enrichment opportunities and the expanded core curriculum including art, vocational and music.   Speech, OT, PT, and O&M services are provided on a pull-out basis determined by each student's individual IEP.  We offer a hands-on approach to education and our classrooms are full of active learning.  Our department is divided by grades and we utilize both large and small group settings for instruction.

Mainstream Opportunities: Attending MSAB is like having access to TWO schools. Not only are students able to access the core courses at MSAB while expanding their social skills, communication skills, and individual identity, we are also able to offer all the courses at Faribault High School to our MSAB students! All courses at the middle school are arranged through our on-site mainstream coordinator who coordinates with educational aides, sets up transportation between the schools and helps with other needed accommodations (Notetakers, etc). Mainstreaming is a very worthwhile experience for many of our students.
