Music and the arts have been an important part of the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind since its founding in 1866. Today, our program continues to inspire creativity, self-expression, and confidence through accessible and engaging artistic experiences designed for students of all ages and abilities.
Whether performing, creating, composing, or exploring new art forms, students develop skills that support academic success, communication, independence, and personal growth.
Music Therapy
Music therapy is an integral part for the educational program for many MSAB students. Through structured musical experiences, students develop skills that support both the Expanded Core Curriculum and their Individualized Education Program goals.
Music therapy may support:
- Academic & cognitive skills
- Communication skills
- Social interaction
- Physical and motor development
- Orientation and mobility concepts
- Sensory integration
- Independence and self-regulation
Students participate in activities such as singing, playing instruments, movement, improvisation, and collaborative music-making using adaptations that meet their individual strengths and needs. Individual music therapy services are also available based on assessment results and IEP goals.
Recording Studio
MSAB's recording studio introduces students to the intersection of music and technology. Using accessible recording software and adaptive technology, students explore music production, audio recording, editing, and podcast creation while developing creativity and digital literacy skills.
Arts Residencies and Community Experiences
Students regularly participate in artist residencies and community arts experiences that expand creativity and cultural appreciation. Visiting artists provide hands-on opportunities in music, theater, dance, creative writing, and visual and tactile arts.
Field trips to performances and cultural institutions provide additional opportunities for students to experience the arts beyond the classroom.
Performance Opportunities
Students are encouraged to share their talents through a variety of school and community performances. Performance opportunities may include:
- Choir
- West African Drumming Ensemble
- Rock Band
- Music Listening Contest
- School concerts and special events
Through these experiences, students build confidence, collaboration, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for music and the arts.
