Academy Plus Transition Program

Students may be considered for Academy Plus if they:

1. Are between the ages of 18–22.

2. Meet Minnesota eligibility criteria for Blind/Visually Impaired services.

3. Have completed high school academic requirements but have not yet received a signed diploma.

4. Are currently receiving services through an IEP.

5. Work with a Rehabilitation Counselor or State Services for the Blind (SSB) counselor.

6. Demonstrate the ability to work toward managing personal care semi-independently or independently.

7. Demonstrate the ability to apply and integrate learned skills.

Level 1

Students participate in structured classes focused on compensatory skills and functional living skills.

Primary focus:

• Supported employment preparation

• Assisted living readiness

Residential setting:

• Fully supervised dormitory

Level 2

Students participate in instruction emphasizing post-secondary readiness and semi-independent living skills.

Primary focus:

• Independent employment readiness

• Exploration of post-secondary options

Residential setting:

• Supervised dormitory or supervised on-campus apartment

Level 3

Students engage in advanced transition planning, post-secondary exploration, and independent living development.

Primary focus:

• Enrollment in a post-secondary course

• Preparation for independent employment

Following a comprehensive living skills assessment and eligibility determination, students may reside in a semi-supervised on-campus residence.

Residential experiences are designed to gradually increase independence while providing the support students need to be successful. MSAB provides an on-campus apartment and house designed to support the continued development of independent living skills under staff supervision.

• Students at intermediate skill levels may reside in the on-campus apartment, receiving evening staff support.

• Students at advanced skill levels who demonstrate readiness for independent living may reside in the Academy Plus house with minimal oversight.

In both settings, students practice essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, and purchasing food while building confidence and self-reliance.
