Alternative Curriculum

The MSAB Alternative Curriculum Program serves students ages 5–22 who benefit from highly individualized instruction designed to develop functional academics, communication, independence, and life skills. Instruction is tailored to each student's strengths, educational needs, and Individualized Education Program (IEP), empowering students to reach their highest level of independence and participation at school, home, and in the community.

Students learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences that promote engagement, confidence, and lifelong learning. Our interdisciplinary team collaborates to provide instruction that supports academic growth, daily living skills, communication, social development, and transition planning.

Individualized Learning

The Alternative Curriculum integrates functional academics with real-world learning experiences that help students develop essential life skills.

Instruction may include:

  • Functional reading and literacy
  • Functional mathematics
  • Communication and language development
  • Assistive technology
  • Home and daily living skills
  • Vocational awareness and work readiness
  • Social and emotional learning
  • Physical education, music, art, and library
  • Community-based learning opportunities

Related services—including Orientation & Mobility, Speech-Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy—are provided based on each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Preparing for Lifelong Success

The Alternative Curriculum Program prepares students for meaningful participation in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. By building functional academic skills, communication, self-determination, and independence, students develop the confidence and abilities needed to achieve their individualized postsecondary goals and experience success throughout their lives.
